Holga Camera

trip2014c583a

trip2014c583b

I used to be confused as to why people would shoot with holgas. They are pretty crappy cameras. Then I got one. I am not super pro-holga, but it does have it’s charm. AND it is way nicer on my shoulder than any of my other cameras.

The Lost Roll

I found a lost roll of film. I developed it and low and behold, here were some Hong Kong pictures from a visa trip and a mountain climbing trip in Beijing from a couple years ago. Enjoy.

In love with film

trip2014a169

trip2014a174

trip2014a187

It’s not a big surprise that I am in love with film. I have switched to 100% film. I did this a couple years ago when I sold my Canon L zooms. I am now left with an aged Canon 30D and 50mm 1.4 as my only digital gear, and that only gets used to digitize my large format negatives.

Many people go on and on about how film has more soul and is more real. They spend lots of time justifying why they shoot film. I will make it simple. I like the cameras. That is why I shoot film. I have two of my dream cameras. A Leica and a 4×5. To finish off my lot, I’ll probably add a panoramic camera in the near future. Something like a 6×12. The Chinese made cameras are a value and apparently quite well made.

The only down side is scanning. I am not a fan of that part. My current scanner can only do one strip of six images at a time. I really think its time to upgrade to the v750 so I can at least scan 4 strips at a time.

Once I do so, I’ll finally be able to get rid of that old Canon…

These were all shot in HoiAn and Hanoi Vietnam. Like most tourists, when I was in HoiAn I had some clothing made. Picked up a tailored leather motorcycle jacket. It added a ton of weight to my backpack, but I knew that I was coming to the end of my trip so I decided to throw better judgement to the wind.

I recently started a new job. It came with a decent raise in salary. For those who don’t know, I am a watch nut. I have never had a truly great watch. I have had decent watches. Lately I have been thinking that I would like to get a nice watch. The one I have my eye on is a Logines. It clocks in at $1500. I am having trouble justifying the price because I would also like to get a Leica 50mm summicron. A new one. It is a bit more at about $2000. I can’t really get both. That would be absurd. Ahh what do I get?

I love to go to zoos. I love big animals that I don’t get to see in Canada. Growing up in Saskatoon, we didn’t have a zoo. We had the Forestry Farm. Occasionally they would have an exotic animal like a lion on loan, but usually it was a lot of Bison, Cows and other domestic animals.

The zoo in Beijing is sadly depressing. Many zoos are. Enclosures that are too small. Not enough stimulus for the animals. Shitty patrons who bang and yell and throw garbage. I need to go on a safari…

Welcome to Hanoi Vietnam. A great city to hang out in for a week while winding down the trip.

I want to talk about my grandpa. I am not sure why, but he has been on my mind for a few days. Charles Gowen is a guy that I deeply respect and admire. He was a Navy man, fighting in the Korean war. His unit was part of the “Train Busters” who destroyed the supply train line on the mainland. He was stationed on the HMCS Crusader which had the highest number of “busts”. In 1977 while working a heavy equipment in Saskatoon, he discovered the oldest Saskatchewan Native site that happened to be 6,000 years old (Now called the Gowen Site). For years he was a pro-level golfer, winning tournaments as far back as I can remember (even having a dedicated trophy room in his house).

When I was young, in the winter, he’d take me out ice fishing. It was more fishing for him as I am pretty sure that I would just spend most of my time playing in the snow. In the summer, he’d take me out golfing at Foam Lake Golf and Country Club. I have fond memories of that place. My sister, cousins and I would spend practically all summer there. It was the first time that I had tonic water. My grandpa told me to get a drink out of the cooler and I thought the tonic water looked good. He asked if I was sure that I wanted that. I was adamant. I recall the initial taste was alike to old rubber bands and I am pretty sure most of it was poured on the fairway off of the golf cart than into my mouth.

Now that I am older and living across the world from him, I don’t get to spend the time with him that I would like. Every time I go home I revel in the fact that I get to spend time with him, listening to his old stories that I have heard many times, that I would gladly listen to thousands more. Tales of traveling to Hong Kong with the Navy, going on shore leave and other adventures that only come from living a full life. I even love listening to what many would call mundane, the birds that have appeared at his feeder, the state of the harvest around Elfros, and who was doing what in a town of less than 100 people.

I can’t wait to get back to Elfros again.
