Trying a slight panoramic crop of some Yangshuo pictures. I really do like the panoramic format. I should get an x-pan…

My Love Affair

I have a love affair with film grain. I think it adds to a photo. I think that is the reason why I have yet to really grasp other formats of photography. I have had medium format cameras and currently have a 4×5 in addition to my Leica. I am having fun with the 4×5 but never got along with the medium format cameras. I like that when I shoot with my Leica I get grain. I love landscapes shot on long lenses with 400 speed 35mm film. It is a radical departure from what most people strive for and what camera makers are telling you what makes a good picture.

Thanks, I’ll stick to my small cameras.

I have been enamored with simple and clean Large Format photos lately. Maybe I am getting sick of living in a megacity like Beijing, I don’t know. I wish it was a bit warmer though so I could load up my 4×5 kit and go hiking in the mountains. That is something I really don’t do enough of. I need to change that…

Colour!

A little bit of a departure for me. Here is some colour shots from my trip. I am not against shooting colour, I just don’t do too much of it. I find shooting colour more difficult that shooting B&W. Everything needs to be more precise or the image lacks punch. I hope I was able to get some punch in these shots.

This is a long one…

Kodak in Trouble

There is no surprise that Kodak as a company in is trouble. They have mismanaged the company for years. So where does that leave us? At best, with a functioning shell of what once was that still makes film. At worst, without Tri-X and Ektar, the two films that I use most. Ah well, there is still Fuji, Ilford, Kentmere, Efke, Foma, Lucky and others still around if Kodak vaporizes. Or I could just pick up wet plate collodian and large format photography.

Merry Christmas

Here is my big holiday post. Sorry for all of the pictures, but they are why this site exists. These were all shot at the Summer Palace in North West Beijing. They were all shot with my Leica M2 and my 50mm Summicron Collapsible. Made in the late 50’s, I often wonder what other things my camera has taken pictures of. In the 50’s and 60’s Leica would professionally stamp your name into the top place of your camera. Mine has the name J.F. Ellison. I’ve done Google searches for the name, but it is a safe bet the former owner is either passed on, or has zero internet footprint. Oh well, it keeps the mystery alive.

All I can say is that the camera is still being put to good use.

Scanning. How I loath it. How key it is.

Here are the initial scans from my National Holiday trip. I went to Shanghai, Hangzhou, Linping and Ningbo for a couple of weeks. I took only the Leica and 35mm Summaron. I shot Ektar 100 for color. I love that stuff. I shot Tri-x and Neopan 400 for B&W.
The more I use the summaron with Ektar, the more I like it. Super retro feel to the shots. The lens is soft, muted and low contrast. The photos come out looking like they were shot decades ago.

Sorry for the dust on the pictures. Looks like I need to clean the ol scanner.
